How to Use a Banquette As a Room Divider

Banquettes offer the casual seating of a restaurant booth combined with extra storage space. These benches are popular in breakfast nooks because of their coziness and utility. Although you most often place them against the wall, they fit in other areas as well. Additionally, banquettes have room divider potential if you pair them with other items and plan the set up between the two rooms you're dividing. This solution works well for living room/kitchen combos in which one room opens to the other.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a color scheme to tie both sides of the room together. For example, if you've selected pink and orange, choose accessories like cushions, artwork, rugs and other accessories that feature both of these colors and place them on both sides of the banquette.

    • 2

Place the banquette in between the two rooms you want to divide. Ensure that you have enough walk space in both the kitchen and living room areas when positioning the banquette. Face the seat part of the banquette toward the kitchen with its back facing the living room area.

    • 3

Paint the wall that stands between the area being divided a different color than the other walls in the area. Use color as a tie in. For example, if the upholstery on your banquette is Chinese red, paint the wall the same color.

    • 4

Hang a series of pictures on the accent wall. Select frames for them that match your color scheme.

    • 5

Scoot a bookshelf behind the banquette. Make sure that the shelf is at least tall enough to extend a little higher than the back of the banquette. If you want the impression of a full wall, choose a taller shelf. Decorate the top of it with potted plants and ceramic jars. This creates a breakfast nook/bistro look.

    • 6

Place floor lamps on both sides of the banquette. Tape the cords down to the floor and cover them with area rugs. These provide extra light to the area for craft projects and dinnertime lighting.

    • 7

Position a table and chairs around the banquette. One way to make the table and chairs match the banquette is to make chair covers that feature the same upholstery that's on the banquette cushion.

    • 8

Throw a rug on the floor in front of the shelf. This functions as a visual anchor for the items on this side of the banquette.

    • 9

Move furniture pieces like a couch, chairs and coffee table so that they flank the area rug. Look for materials that match those on the banquette to tie them to that side of the room.
