How to Calculate the Proper Height for Hanging Pictures on Your Wall

For maximum enjoyment of your pictures and prints, art galleries suggest that patrons hang all artwork at eye level at home. The top of the frame shouldn't fall at eye level; rather, the exact center of the print should stand at eye level. Homeowners have a tendency to place art much too high. If you're taller or shorter than average, calculate the ideal hanging height by following the same guidelines that art galleries use. By sticking to the formula throughout your home, all of your pictures will seem to flow from room to room.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the height of your picture from top to bottom. Divide the answer by two.

    • 2

Measure the distance between the top of the frame and the peak of the hanging wire when drawn taut.

    • 3

Subtract the answer from Step 2 from your answer in Step 1.

    • 4

Add 60 inches to your answer from Step 3, and mark this point on the wall, measuring up from the floor. This spot marks where you will position your screw or hook to hang the picture.
