Needle Nose Pliers Vs. Chain Nose Pliers

Pliers are a must-have for any homeowner. There are several types of pliers, each of which is best suited to certain tasks. Many people mistake needle-nose pliers for chain-nose pliers, or think of the two as interchangeable, but each has things it does better than the other. Telling the two apart is as easy as looking at their clamps: needle-nose pliers have long clamps with small, pointed ends, while chain-nose pliers' clamps are flat and smooth at the base, with tapered tips. Knowing which pair to use can save home decorators time, effort and frustration.
  1. Wrapping

    • When a project calls for wrapping, curling or twisting thin metal or wire, chain-nose pliers are your best tool. Their smooth, flat clamps and tapered tips help you clamp onto even the thinnest wire and twist it into as small a loop as you need.

    Cutting

    • When you need to cut wire or thin strips of metal down to a certain size, needle-nose pliers are best. Their long, pointed tips help you grip the wire, and the sharp cutter at the bottom of the clamps easily cuts through.

    Bending

    • When you need to bend wire or thin metal at a sharp angle, you'll want to use needle-nose pliers. They give you control and tightly grip metal without slipping. They're especially helpful in holding and bending parts that are too small for your fingers.

    Crimping

    • Many projects call for a bead or bit of wire to be crimped. When that's the case, choose chain-nose pliers to get the job done. Their smooth clamps easily crimp even the smallest bit of metal.

    Picking Up Objects

    • When you need to pick up small objects, or reach an object wedged in a tight place, grab a pair of needle-nose pliers. Their long, slim clamps and pointed tips allow them to fit into places fingers can't, and reach into places the shorter chain-nose pliers won't go.
