Seashells, whether gathered at the shore one by one or purchased in quantity at a crafts store, can be strung on lengths of filament fishing line to create a wind chime, or strands of shells can be hung side by side for a novel window treatment or combined with a plastic liner for a striking shower curtain. Repeat the shell motif in a bathroom by using a large shell as a soap dish and a shell-motif fabric or wall covering to complete the look.
A ruffled clam shell with both sides intact can be lit from within to create a glowing night light. A small clear or colored bulb is placed in the base of the shell with the electrical cord exiting through a hole drilled in the bottom. The other half of the ruffled shell is placed on top and a cord switch controls the light. The completed light can be placed in a Lucite or glass display case to keep it dust-free.
Seashells can be displayed beautifully as Christmas tree decorations. Strands of small shells are charming swagged as garland and larger shells with holes drilled for silk cord loops are hung as ornaments. Combine them with tiny lights and a starfish tree topper to create magical seaside holiday ambiance. A manger scene can easily be created to complement the mood by placing straw in a large shell and adding figures of Mary, Joseph and the Christ Child.
Seashells can be displayed effectively for a mantel or dining table centerpiece with pillar candles of varied heights and diameters; larger shells make unusual containers for flower arrangements. Fill decorative, clear glass vases with shells for display on shelves and side tables. A clear glass apothecary jar of appropriate size can be filled with smaller shells to create the base for a shaded lamp that makes an eye-catching conversation piece.
