How to Hang a Kimono on a Wall

The Japanese word "kimono" originally translated to "clothes" or "something to wear." Today it refers to a specific traditional garment in Japanese culture. The kimono has been worn by men, women and children since the eighth century. The fabric is often silk or a synthetic printed with colorful designs. In twenty-first century Japan, the kimono is worn only on special occasions. Kimonos can be displayed on a wall to add an interesting decorative element to your room.

Instructions

    • 1
The kimono has a "T" shape.

Spread the kimono on a flat surface so that the sleeves are extended, forming a "T" shape. Measure the distance between the edge of one kimono sleeve to the other sleeve. Use a hacksaw to cut a 1-inch PVC pipe 1/2 inch shorter than this measurement.

    • 2

Cut a strip of cotton quilt batting that measures the length of the pipe. It should be wide enough to wrap around the pipe once. Wind white thread around the batting to secure it to the pipe. Knot the ends of the thread. The batting will provide a nonslip and protective surface on which to hang the kimono.

    • 3

Cut an 18-inch length of white silk or cotton cord. Tie one end of the cord 3 inches to the right of the center of the pipe and secure it with a double knot. Tie and double-knot the other end of the cord 3 inches to the left of the center of the pipe.

    • 4

Determine where you want to hang the kimono on the wall. Mark a spot on the wall with a pencil about 2 1/2 inches above the point where the center of the kimono's neckline will be. Insert a nail at a slant on the mark.

    • 5

Insert the padded pipe through the sleeves of the kimono. The front or the back of the garment can be facing you; display the side with the most ornamentation. Adjust the garment so that it will hang straight.

    • 6

Slip the cord over the nail to hang the kimono.
