How to Cover Canvas Art With Plexiglass

Most original artwork comes as is, without frame or protection. There are several ways to protect an artwork. This includes having it framed, or framing it yourself. A unique way of protecting and displaying an artwork is to cover it in Plexiglass. Plexiglass is easier to fit to specific sizes. If it breaks, it is easier to clean up, with no dangerous shards.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure your artwork. This includes the height, length and width of the artwork. Write down your measurements, as you will need to know the measurements to find a frame for the work, as well as finding a piece of Plexiglass of the proper size.

    • 2

Find a frame that will fit the canvas. If your canvas is irregularly sized, you will need to get a frame made specifically for the piece.

    • 3

Choose a piece of Plexiglass of the same size as your artwork. You can get it cut at a local home supply store.

    • 4

Check to make sure every thing fits together correctly. Then, lay your Plexiglass inside the frame, where glass would usually go.

    • 5

Next, place your canvas gently into the frame. Insert a canvas clip onto each side of the work, in between the frame and the art. Slide the clip down gently until it connects with the frame.

    • 6

Once the clips are properly inserted, you will pull the rest of the clip over the stretcher bar. The clip will hook under the stretcher bar.

    • 7

Using your ruler, mark congruent places on the two sides of the frame. Hammer a penny nail into your mark until 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch are left visible.

Using one end of the wire, wrap it tightly several times around the penny nail. Stretch the wire across the artwork. You do not want it to be too tight. It needs to be a little loose. Wrap the wire around the second penny nail. Use scissors to cut the wire.
