Paint a focal wall. A focal wall is one wall that you paint a different color than you paint the walls around it. For example, paint your focal wall cobalt blue and the walls around it off-white.
Mix up the frames on your artwork and photos. Choose frames that are different colors, sizes and shapes. Hang these in clusters. The act of grouping a few pictures together will make them look like they belong together while still creating some visual interest on the walls.
Convert some of your family photos to black and white or sepia-toned pictures. Hang them so that they tell a story visually. For example, if you have tons of pictures that you took at your last family reunion, have the best ones converted to black and white and then hang them in your hallway in rows that reflect the chronology of events.
Stencil a design on your wall. Choose a design that fits your decorating style. For instance, Asian writing would enhance a Japanese-themed room. Paint some black characters on an Asian red or jade green wall before you hang up the rest of your artwork.
Include tapestries as a part of the display if you're decorating in a Mediterranean style such as Tuscan, Spanish or French. Choose a tapestry with a medieval theme and hang it on your wall from a tapestry bar.
Hang up your collection of decorative plates. You can find plate holders to hang this display up or create a more interesting wall arrangement by hanging up some floating shelves on the wall and standing the decorative plates on the shelves using plate stands.
Buy some wooden letters, paint them and hang them above a window or doorway to draw the eye to this area.
Hang mirrors and candle sconces above a fireplace or in the middle of a gallery of pictures on your wall. Mirrors reflect a room's light, making it look lighter and bigger. Candles add a soft glow. Hang the candle sconces near the mirrors to double the effect.
