How to Decorate Walls With Comic Books

Serious collectors often store comic books in long white boxes, hidden from view. Unfortunately, this prevents people from enjoying the colorful, dynamic, well-rendered drawings on their covers. You can preserve comics and display them at the same time with special frames, bags and backboards. As long as you keep the comics away from sunlight and humidity, you can share your love of comics and add visual interest to a room without decreasing your collection's value.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose the appropriate room to hang your comics. Comics should be kept in a cool, dry area. Humidity and heat can damage comic book paper beyond repair.

    • 2

Choose an appropriate wall to hang your comics. Comics should never be hung in the path of direct sunlight, as the UV rays can damage and fade the inks. Regular electric lighting will not damage your comics, since only fluorescent lights contain UV rays. Fluorescent lights should have a UV shield to prevent the transmission of these rays inside the home.

Slide one acid-free backboard into each mylar bag, one for each comic you wish to hang. Acid-free boards are essential to protect the comic's paper from damaging acid. You can purchase mylar bags and backboards specifically for comics at comic book stores. These supplies are labeled for use with comics from various eras: Golden Age comics, sold from c. 1938 through c. 1955; Silver Age comics, sold from c. 1956 through c. 1970; and Modern Age comics sold from c. 1971 onward. You can usually find the comic's publication date on the cover, on the inside front cover or on the page opposite the inside back cover. Comics from different eras typically came in different standard dimensions, so Modern Age comic bags and boards will be too small for Silver and Golden Age comics.

Slide one comic carefully into each mylar bag with the back of the comic against the backboard and the top of the comic facing the bag's opening.

    • 5

Select an appropriate frame for each comic. Golden Age comics are about 7 ¼ by 10 ¼ inches, Silver Age comics are about 6 ¾ by 10 ¼ inches and Modern Age comics are about 6 5/8 by 10 ¼ inches. You can purchase frames made especially for use with comic books, or use regular photo frames.

    • 6

Slide a comic into each frame with the front of the comic against the glass. Place the picture frame backing over the back of the comic and secure it in place.

    • 7

Install a picture hook on the wall where you want a comic to go, using a hammer and nail. Choose picture hooks and nails labeled to support the weight of your frame and comic. If hanging multiple comics, use a level to mark the placement of subsequent picture hooks to ensure that all of the comics hang neatly in a straight line.

Hang a frame on each hook.
