Instructions

    • 1

Measure your teapot. Set your teapot on a flat surface. Hold a tape measure from the bottom of your teapot and stretch it straight up to the top. Add three inches to this measurement. This will be the height of the tea cozy. Measure across the middle of your teapot horizontally. Measure in between the handle and tea spout. You only need the measurement of the teapot itself. This will be the width.

    • 2

Fold your quilted material in half vertically. The fold should be close to you. Measure up from the fold to the height measurement you took of your teapot. Make a horizontal dash with a piece of taylor's chalk. Measure from the side edge of the fabric in, according to your width measurement. Make a vertical dash here.

    • 3

Use a yard stick to draw a line across each dash. You will have a horizontal line that intersects with a vertical line. Measure 3/4 inch out from the vertical line and mark a seam allowance line.

    • 4

Cut along the seam allowance line up to where the lines intersect. Cut across the horizontal line next. This will create a square, rectangular shaped piece of fabric, depending on the size of your tea pot. Unfold the fabric and fold it in the other direction, so that both outside sides of the fabric are touching.

    • 5

Go to the left side of the soon to be tea cozy. Measure in 1/4 inch and draw a vertical line from top to bottom next to the edge. Fold the edge over, making sure the fold is one the line. Pin in place. Make sure you only fold over the top layer here. You will flip the soon to be tea cozy over and do the other side in a minute. Go to the right side of the fabric and repeat the exact same process to fold over the edge. Don't forget to pin it in place.

    • 6

Pick up your soon to be tea cozy and flip it over to the other side. Fold the edges down just like you did on the other side in step 5. Measure in 1/4 in. and fold the edge over. This creates a hemline for the side edges of your tea cozy.

    • 7

Measure the base of the spout on your teapot. On one side of your folded fabric, either the left of right, mark this measurement with a vertical line. You will not sew in this area. It will be left open for the tea spout. Measure the handle of your teapot. Mark this measurement of the other side of the folded fabric. You will avoid sewing in this region as well.

    • 8

Sew up the sides of the folded fabric. Do not sew up the tea spout and tea handle openings. Also, do not sew across the top of the folded fabric. This will be how you will put the tea cozy on the teapot.

    • 9

Mark a horizontal line around the top of the soon to be tea cozy, one inch down. Go around the cozy turning the fabric down, making sure the fold is one the line you drew. Pin in place. This is the beginning of your casing. Use a sewing machine to sew a stitch along the line of pins. Remove the pins when you are finished sewing. Make sure your go around the top of the tea cozy instead of straight across the opening. You don't want to sew the opening up.

    • 10

Turn your tea cozy right-side-out. String a piece of ribbon through the casing pocket at the top of the tea cozy. Tie a knot at each end of the ribbon. Your tea cozy is now ready for use.

    • 11

Pick up your teapot carefully. Slip the tea cozy underneath and over the bottom of the teapot. Set the teapot down on the table. Carefully bring up the spout side of the tea cozy and slip the spout through the opening. Slip the handle through the opening on the other side of the tea cozy. Bring the top on up over the tea pot and pull the ribbon to cinch it closed. Tie a pretty bow.
