How to Wire a 4x12 Cabinet

Speaker cabinets come in many different configurations. A speaker enclosure with four 12-inch speakers is best suited for the frequency output of guitars, but is also well-suited for keyboards and steel guitars. You can wire a 4x12 cabinet with little trouble, if you are familiar with the soldering process.

Things You'll Need

  • 4x12 cabinet
  • Screwdriver

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the back panel of the speaker enclosure with the screwdriver. Keep in mind that there are wires attached to the input jack on the back panel, so be careful not to rip these while removing the panel.

    • 2

Remove all existing speaker wire by touching the heated soldering iron tip to each terminal on the speakers and the input jack and pulling the speaker wire away when the existing solder becomes liquefied.

    • 3

Use the cutting area of the wire strippers to cut a length of speaker wire long enough to reach from the terminals of the top left speaker to the terminals of the top right speaker. Cut another length to reach from the bottom left speaker to the bottom right speaker.

    • 4

Strip 3/4 inch of insulation from each end of the cut speaker wires with the wire strippers.

    • 5

Use the soldering iron and resin-core solder to attach one end of the speaker wire to the positive terminal of the top left speaker. Solder the other end of the speaker wire to the negative terminal of the top right speaker.

    • 6

Repeat these steps to connect the positive terminal of the bottom left speaker to the negative terminal of the bottom right speaker.

    • 7

Cut and strip lengths of speaker wire to reach from the negative terminal of the top left speaker to the negative terminal of the bottom left speaker, as well as from the positive terminal of the top right speaker to the positive terminal of the bottom right speaker. Attach these wires to the appropriate terminals with the soldering iron and solder.

Replace the back panel of the speaker enclosure. Connect an amplifier to the 4x12 cabinet, then plug your musical instrument into the amp. Turn the amplifier on and test the speaker enclosure to make sure all speakers are working properly.
