How to Decorate a Wall Above Basement Stairs

A wall above a basement stair is a large space that can have a lot of decorative impact. Once the space is prepared with a new coat of paint and removal of any dirt and dust, you can put up artwork. Choose one large bold painting, print or textile to take advantage of the space. When you use a grouping of items in a space such as this, they often get lost and have minimal visual interest. Display heirloom rugs or a painting done on an extra large canvas by the whole family to create an eye-catching entrance to your basement.

Instructions

    • 1

Put a fresh coat of paint on the wall above the basement stairs to provide a perfect backdrop for your décor.

    • 2

Measure the space over the stairway. Note the dimensions and subtract a 2-foot margin all the way around the "art" area.

    • 3

Note the color or theme of the rooms that the wall is viewed from as well as the color or theme of the basement.

    • 4

Purchase an extra large art print, rug or textile that will take up the majority of the space on the wall. It should be no more than 2 feet by 2 feet less than the total space measurement.

    • 5

Frame the print or purchase hardware to hang the textiles safely on the wall. Use a stair-ladder to hang the art piece.
