How to Decorate a Corridor in a Kitchen

A corridor in a kitchen area is often a dark and narrow passageway that is a forgotten decorating opportunity. Bulky artwork or decorations will only make the space feel cluttered and more oppressive. When you use decorative lighting in the corridor and a semi-abstract kitchen-related design, you brighten the space and add interest. Rope lighting mimics more expensive neon lighting and will add an attention-getting artistic element to the space as well as light and guide people through it. Change designs seasonally to keep the lighting-art updated and fresh.

Instructions

    • 1

Tap a nail into the vertical middle of the wall at one end of the corridor. Tie a piece of string to the nail.

    • 2

Pull the string down the wall and make a loose spoon shape using a contour drawing method (all one line). Tap in additional nails at the beginning of the bowl of the spoon, and tape the string in place to get a rough idea of the spoon shape.

    • 3

Adjust the size and shape of your string-spoon as necessary so that it fills the length of the corridor.

    • 4

Remove the string, but leave the nails and tape in place. Measure the string to get the measurement of the rope light you will need.

    • 5

Purchase the proper length of rope lighting in red or white.

    • 6

With the end of the rope-light cord at the baseboard, attach the rope light to the wall using C-hooks or clear plastic hooks in place of the nails and tape markers.

    • 7

Create the spoon shape on the wall with the rope light. Use any excess rope lighting to double-back over the spoon shape if necessary.

    • 8

Use cord-hiding trim to camouflage the cord hanging down from the lighting.

    • 9

Plug the lighting into the hallway outlet to complete the corridor artwork.
