How to Hang a Portrait

Hanging a portrait is often an important part of decorating a home or business. However, dealing with crooked frames or wondering if the portrait is too high or too low causes endless frustration for many people. Having an extra person to assist you is helpful but with a little extra effort you can hang your own portrait. The most important factor in hanging any artwork or pictures is to measure carefully at several points before hammering in picture hooks.

Instructions

    • 1

Hold the portrait on the wall at the place you want it to be and make a small mark with the pencil at the bottom of the portrait's frame. Set the portrait down once you've made the mark.

    • 2

Measure the distance from the bottom of the portrait's frame to the hanging wire on the back.

    • 3

Start at the first mark and measure the portrait measurement. For example, if it was 15 inches from the bottom of the frame to the wire, you would measure 15 inches up from the first mark.

    • 4

Make a second mark on the wall. This is where the picture hooks will go.

    • 5

Hammer both picture hooks on the wall. Place the hooks at the same level and about eight inches apart. If the portrait is extremely large, place the hooks farther apart. The double hook holds the portrait steady.

    • 6

Place the portrait on the hooks. Check to see that it is straight and if not, adjust until your portrait looks perfect.
