Wood Button Crafts

Wood buttons can be used to enhance any type of craft. Some of the button crafts you can make serve a purpose, while others are simply decorative. Purchase wooden buttons at fabric and craft stores. Be on the lookout for good deals on bags of assorted buttons sold at thrift stores and flea markets.
  1. Magnets

    • Wood buttons, especially larger ones, make good magnets. Add a drop of hot glue to the back of the button and place a piece of magnet on the glue. When working with hot glue, be careful that it does not go through the holes in the button. It is hard to remove the hot glue from the holes and it could burn your fingers while you are working.

    Keepsake Boxes

    • Purchase an unfinished wooden box. If you want to stain or paint the box, do so before attaching the buttons. Select wooden buttons in various sizes and colors. Arrange them on the top of your box before attaching the buttons permanently. Once you have a design that you like, use a hot-glue gun to adhere them to the box. You can cover the box completely with an assortment of similar-sized buttons or add a few large and colorful buttons of different shapes.

    Christmas Ornaments

    • Make Christmas ornaments with your wooden buttons. Cut a piece of card stock in the shape of a wreath with a hole in the center. Glue the buttons onto the card stock wreath. Add enough layers of buttons to hide the card stock. Fill in any spaces with small beads or glitter. Allow it to dry completely. Turn the wreath over and decorate the other side with more buttons. Thread a red or green ribbon through the hole in the center and tie the ends together to make a loop to hang the ornament.

    Bookmarks

    • Make some bookmarks with your buttons. Cut some lengths of ribbon--about 10 inches will work for most books. Hand-sew one button on each end of the ribbon. This will prevent the bookmark from sliding through the volume. To keep the ends of the ribbon from fraying, either cut the ends at an angle or use a lighter to melt the ends of the threads.
