How to Hang China Plates Onto the Wall

China plates are often collectibles or even family heirlooms that sit in a cabinet so that they do not chip or crack. Instead of keeping these valuables stored away and hidden, consider hanging the plates on a wall in your home to serve as decorative artwork. You can arrange multiple china plates into creative designs instead of simple straight geometric lines. Hanging them requires using hidden fasteners that make the plates appear to float freely.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill a sink half full of lukewarm water and add 1 to 2 tsp. liquid dish soap. Insert the china plates into the sink and wash them with a non-abrasive cloth to remove all dust and surface oils. Rinse with clean water and dry each plate thoroughly with a towel.

    • 2

Lay the plates on the floor or a table with the finished sides facing upward. Move the plates around into different patterns until you are pleased with how they look. If you have many plates, consider breaking them into multiple groupings.

    • 3

Place a tape measure at one side of the chosen wall and stretch it all the way to the other side. Divide the measurement in half to locate the center of the wall. Draw a small pencil mark on the wall.

    • 4

Hold each plate up to the wall in the proper location and use the pencil to mark the back center of each plate on the wall. Insert a nail through each location. If you feel no resistance behind the wall, create a hole using a 1/4-inch drill bit and a drill. Then insert a hollow wall anchor and a screw.

    • 5

Open a package of no-wire disc plate hangers and remove the protective backing from the adhesive. Some hangers require that you dampen the adhesive with water, while others do not. If water is required, apply it and let the disc sit for the amount of time instructed until it is sticky.

    • 6

Turn one of the center plates over and press the adhesive on the disc firmly to the back of the plate.

    • 7

Repeat the process with all of the remaining plates and allow them to dry overnight. Test each hanger by pulling on it gently to ensure that the adhesive is secure.

    • 8

Hold each plate up to the proper location on the wall and slide the round loop on the hanger over the nails or screws in the wall.
