How to Decorate Asymmetrical Photo Groups

Hanging your photographs in an asymmetrical fashion creates a quirky space and a creative way to display your portraits. While the asymmetrical decoration can sometimes appear to be unplanned and sporadic in placement, there is actually a detailed thought process behind the task. Anyone can decorate in an asymmetrical fashion as long as they keep a few basic guidelines in mind. Using many different sizes and styles of frames is important; however, make sure that the photos are all related to a central theme, such as family and friends.

Instructions

    • 1

Mark the area where you will be decorating with painter's tape. Mark the entire perimeter as well as the exact center of the area. Use the available space to determine how many of your photographs will fit into the space.

    • 2

Trace the outline of each of your photographs, including the frame, onto a sheet of scrap paper and cut it out to use as a template. For larger photos, it may be necessary to tape sheets of paper together to make the template large enough.

    • 3

Arrange the templates on a large flat surface that is the approximate size of the wall space you will be using to get a loose idea of how you want the photographs to appear. Get creative and try many different layouts until you find one you like.

    • 4

Transfer the paper templates to the wall space one at a time. Use tape to attach the templates to the wall in the exact layout you want the pictures to hang. Make any final adjustments to the layout.

    • 5

Hammer a nail into the wall for each picture frame. You can nail directly through the paper templates. Refer to the backs of the frames for reference as to where the hangers are located. Some frames have two hangers and will therefore need two nails.

Remove the templates from the wall one at a time, replacing each template with its coordinating photograph. Use the level on top of the frame to hang the photograph straight.
