Place a shallow square container or vase on a table. Hold a flower against the outer edge of the container and determine its height, or how high you want it to protrude over the rim.
Trim the lower ends of the stems at the desired height using clippers. Cut on the diagonal to help the stems absorb maximum water, thereby prolonging their life in the container. Also clip off leaves from the stems that will fall below the level of water in the container.
Spread an even layer of colored marbles over the base of a glass container. Alternatively, cut floral foam with a utility knife so it fits snugly inside the cavity of the container. Dry fit the foam by placing it inside or trim excess along its edges. Press the foam after placing it in the container. Pour water into the container using a jug until it is two-thirds full. Allow the foam to absorb water for a minute.
Lower a flower into a corner of the square container and push it gently into the colored marbles or foam. Insert a flower into the remaining corners of the vase and one in the center. Step back and review the height of the arrangement so far to ensure the tops of the flowers are level. If required, trim excess stem length or insert a tall stem further into the marbles.
Add flowers into the container to fill empty spots. When inserting the stems into the marbles or foam, avoid packing adjacent blooms too tight to prevent damage. Instead, ensure the blooms only touch each other to enhance the shape of the square arrangement. Review the arrangement and rearrange or trim flowers that stick out at odd angles or higher or lower than surrounding ones. If needed, pour more water into the vase.
