How to Display a Shadowbox

Shadowboxes are used to displaying three-dimensional memorabilia, such as a signed Babe Ruth baseball or an old family memento. Shadowboxes come in several shapes and sizes and are available at most hobby retailers. Jazz up your boxes by creating your own backgrounds in each box with scrapbook or wallpaper paper. Treat the shadow box like a three-dimensional picture frame when trying to figure out how and where to display it.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the shadowbox on a flat surface like a wall shelf or on an end table, bookshelf or desk. Think about where you would display a picture frame, then use those ideas to determine where you would put the shadowbox.

    • 2

Hang the shadowbox on a wall. Use the attached hardware that came with the shadowbox to display it. Find a stud in the wall before inserting your nails or screws. If the shadowbox is particularly heavy or large, secure it to the wall with two heavy screws.

    • 3

Test the lighting when displaying your shadowboxes. Because the boxes are three-dimensional, they have a tendency to create shadows, which might affect how the items in the box look.

    • 4

Group several shadowboxes together on a wall to create an area of visual interest. Create a block of boxes by hanging four to create a square or rectangle shape on your wall. Display nine square small shadow boxes in the same manner to create a square shape.

    • 5

Hang the shadowboxes at eye level or above.
