How to Mount a Canopy

A canopy can quickly transform a bedroom's presence. Add a canopy to any bed by mounting one on the wall behind the headboard, on the ceiling above the headboard or within the central airspace area over the bed. Create the ceiling canopies by mounting rings or other platforms with draped fabric, usually a see-through netting, hanging down to the floor. You can easily accomplish canopy mounting in one afternoon and create a relaxing atmosphere within any bedroom.

Instructions

  1. Four-Post Look

    • 1

Measure the size of your bed to hang the canopy above. Make the hanging canopy a little smaller than the size of the bed to give a more majestic look. Purchase curtain rods that are 2 inches shorter than the length and width of your bed.

    • 2

Measure the space on your ceiling. Use a pencil to lightly mark off the boundaries where the rods will hang. Mark each side and the foot of the bed; the head of the bed will be against the wall. Mark off a location a third of the way into the boundary for each line.

    • 3

Screw the ceiling hooks into the marked locations. Make sure that the hooks are perpendicular to the boundary lines for the curtain rods.

    • 4

Slide the curtain rods through the top of the curtains. Hang the curtain rods from the ceiling hooks and adjust the curtains to flow over the bed.

    Canopy Ring

    • 5

Measure from wall to wall, going across the bed in both directions. This will help you determine the exact center of the bed in the room if you take the dimension of your bed and subtract it from the length and width of the room. For example, if your room is 14 feet by 12 feet and your bed is 4 feet wide, centered on the 14-foot wall, then the center width of your bed is at the 7-foot mark. If the bed is not centered on the wall, then find out how far the bed is from each wall to determine the exact center. Write both the length and width measurements for the room.

    • 6

Find the bed center on the ceiling using the tape measure along with your center measurements. Mark the center using a pencil, making a dot.

    • 7

Hang a ceiling hook into the mark on the ceiling. This will be your focal point for the canopy ring.

    • 8

Guide your fabric through the embroidery hoop so that the top makes a compete circle, you will need four even pieces of material.

    • 9

Cut four pieces of fishing line 1 foot in length. Tie one end of each piece of fishing line in between the fabric pieces on the embroidery hoop.

    • 10

Tie the other end of the fishing lines into a knot around a key ring. Hang the entire assembly from the key ring onto the ceiling hook. Drape the material over the edges of the bed.
