How to Install Velvet Drawer Liners

Unusual or antique boxes make attractive accessories in rooms, but sometimes the inside isn't as charming as the outside. Painting the inside is one solution, but painting isn't as elegant as a velvet liner. Adding a liner to protect drawer bottoms and cover the sides provides a finished look to the drawers. You may even come to the conclusion that adding a velvet liner creates a box that's beautiful enough to give as a gift.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the inside of the drawer for width and length. Subtract 1/8-inch from each side so the liner will fit once the velvet is attached.

    • 2

Trace the measurements onto poster board, and cut the board using a utility knife.

    • 3

Place the velvet on a hard, flat surface with the wrong side facing up. Add a 1/2-inch seam allowance to each side of the drawer measurement, and cut the velvet to the measurements.

    • 4

Spread newspapers to cover your work surface, and place the poster board on top of the newspapers. Spread a thin layer of craft glue evenly over the surface of the poster board.

    • 5

Lay the velvet fabric with the wrong side facing up. Smooth the velvet to remove any wrinkles.

    • 6

Place the glued side of the poster board to the wrong side of the velvet. Make certain the 1/2-inch seam allowance is distributed evenly beyond the edges of the board.

    • 7

Flip the board over, and make necessary adjustments in the fabric to ensure there are no wrinkles or creases. Use a rolling pin to press the velvet to the glue.

    • 8

Flip the board over to show the underside. Spread glue 1/2-inch along the four edges. Fold the material over, and press it to the glue. Trim excess material at the corners that isn't glued to remove bulk fabric. This won't be visible once the liner is placed in the drawer and doesn't need to be cut neatly. Removing excess fabric from the corner will help the liner lay flat.

Allow the glue to dry according to the manufacturer's directions. Insert the liner into the drawer once you are certain there are no sticky spots on the bottom of the liner that could adhere to the drawer.
