How to Attach the Weights to the Chain on a Cuckoo Clock

An important last step in installing a new cuckoo clock is to set up the chains and weights hanging from the bottom of the clock correctly. Do not remove the wire ties and plastic bags from around the chains protruding from the opening underneath your new cuckoo clock until you're ready to install the weights. If you do so, the weight-bearing chains may slip off their sprockets -- and if that happens, only a trained clockmaker has the skill to carry out the necessary repairs.

Instructions

    • 1

Mount your new cuckoo clock on the wall as directed by the manufacturer.

    • 2

Undo the twist ties around the plastic bags holding the chains protruding from the bottom of the clock. Unravel any knots and straighten the chains out so that they hang freely.

    • 3

Carefully remove the twist ties holding the chains tightly against the base of the clock. These ties prevent the chains from slipping off the sprockets during shipping and while installing the clock.

    • 4

Secure the weights by looping the hooks attached to the ends of the chains through the holes in the weights. A standard cuckoo clock has two chains and identical weights, but if you have a musical cuckoo clock with three chains protruding from the bottom and three weights provided, hang the odd sized heavier weight over the hook on the central chain; this chain is usually labeled and marked as the music chain.
