Cute Craft Ideas With Shelf Liner

Some people save all their shelf liner leftovers because they figure they can use them for other projects later on. You can make a variety of crafts from shelf liner, from useful items for yourself to simple things the kids can create. Choose either adhesive backed shelf liner or rubber, non-stick liner for different crafts.
  1. Embroidery

    • Use rubber shelf liner as a medium for embroidery. If you start with white shelf liner, use a marker to transfer a design that you can then follow using needle and thread. Use different color markers to show where you want to use different colors of thread. This is a good project for children who want to learn embroidery. The squares in the shelf liner make it easy to insert and pull out a needle, weaving the thread through. If want your finished design to be a specific shape, such as a circle, simply cut out the shape, leaving one or two rows of the shelf liner intact. The shelf liner won't unravel as aida cloth for cross stitching will.

    Wall Decals

    • Use adhesive shelf liner to create decals for wall décor for your child's room. Use a variety of adhesive shelf liner scraps to create flowers, bugs, stars or any other small design you can come up with. Coloring books and cookie cutters are helpful for making patterns and finding more ideas. To make your decals more interesting, cut out two or three pieces of the same design in various sizes. When attaching them to the wall, start with the larger and end with the smaller, overlapping the decals. Decals work on furniture as well as the walls.

    Magnetic Board

    • Keep all your important messages in one place by creating a magnetic message board. Recycle an old cookie sheet that may not be the best for cooking anymore. Buy an inexpensive one from the dollar store if you don't have anything suitable for recycling. Use the back of the cookie sheet to trace around the adhesive shelf liner. Trace on the back of the shelf liner so you don't leave marks on the decorative side. Cut out the shelf liner and stick it to the back of the cookie sheet. The hole in the cookie sheet's rim makes an ideal hanger; just drive a nail into the wall and hang the sheet up. Use magnets to attach messages to your magnetic board.

    Placemats

    • This is an easy craft if your kids are bored and need something to do. Use the rubber shelf liner to make personalized placemats for each member of your family. The non-skid surface makes them perfect for keeping plates in place. Choose a different color for each member of the family, then cut out a piece of the shelf liner in your desired shape, such as rectangular or oval. Alternatively, if you want all the placemats to be the same color, personalize the placemats by painting the names of each family member. To keep the paint from damaging your work surface, put some paper under the placemats to catch the paint as it leaks through the holes in the shelf liner.
