Glass Jar Wall Art Ideas

Instead of throwing used glass jars into the recycling bin, reuse them as art for your walls. Collect jars with interesting shapes and colors and find vintage jars at yard sales, antique stores or flea markets. Using them in unexpected ways takes an everyday item from boring knickknack to creative wall art.
  1. Terrariums

    • Create a wall of terrariums. Layer an inch of small pebbles, a bit of activated charcoal and a few inches of potting soil into glass jars. Plant a bit of moss, a tiny fern or a small succulent in each jar. Give them a bit of water and line them up on shelves on your wall.

    Mosaic

    • Recycle glass into a mosaic for your wall. Wrap glass jars and bottles in an old towel and crush the glass with a hammer. Wear safety glasses and gloves and work very carefully with broken glass. Glue the glass pieces to wood, cement board or another surface with mortar and let it dry for 24 hours. Fill in the spaces between the glass with grout, if desired. Mount your mosaic on the wall.

    Magnetic Jars

    • Mount a sheet of stainless steel to the wall. Collect several glass jars with lids and glue a magnet to the top of each lid. Fill the jars with spices, colored sand, moss, beads, feathers, silk flowers and other small found objects. Put the lids on the jars and stick them to the stainless steel sheet.

    Hanging Lanterns

    • Put some pebbles or colored glass stones into several glass jars and pour in a couple of inches of sand. Place a tea light or votive candle into each jar and press it into the sand to keep it steady. Install several metal hooks onto a wall and hang the jar lanterns with strings of beads, ribbon, picture wire or twine. Make sure the strings are long enough to keep the candle flame several inches away.
