How to Hang Canvas Art on Strings

A suitable piece of decor for most rooms, canvas art can transform a drab wall into one you and your guests can admire. Traditionally, canvas art is displayed in a simple wooden frame, or it is fitted around a wooden stretcher so only the canvas is visible. Use the appropriate measurements to securely hang your piece so that no strings, hooks or bolts are visible.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the height of your frame or stretcher from the very top to the very bottom with a ruler. Mark a spot one-quarter of the way down with a pencil on each side of the frame.

    • 2

Choose two eye bolts that will penetrate approximately two-thirds of the way into the depth of your frame or stretcher. These bolts will commonly be 1 inch long. Screw the eye bolts into the marks on each side of the frame.

    • 3

Cut a length of string that is 8 inches longer than the width of your canvas.

    • 4

Thread the string through one of the eye bolts and tie it securely with a common granny knot. Tie the other end of the string securely to the other eye bolt with another granny knot. Leave approximately 1 inch of slack in the string. Tie the other end of the string securely to the other eye bolt and leave approximately 1 inch of slack in the string.

    • 5

Knock on the wall where you will display your canvas. Feel for areas with no vibration or hollow sounds. This is where wall studs, which can bear the weight of your canvas, may be located. Hold your canvas against these spots to determine where it looks best.

    • 6

Mark the wall at the top and center of your canvas with a pencil. From this spot, measure down one-quarter of the height of your canvas. Subtract 1 inch from that measurement. Mark this spot on the wall with a pencil and drill a hole into it using a 6 mm masonary drill bit.

    • 7

Insert a 6 mm wall plug into this hole and tap it flush to the wall with a small hammer. Screw a 6 mm picture hook - available from hardware or craft stores - into this wall plug.

    • 8

Place your canvas against the wall and make sure the string goes into the hook. Allow the canvas to hang. Adjust it left or right until it hangs parallel to the floor and ceiling.
