How to Decorate a Wall Over a Piano

A piano in a room provides you with a focal point for the space. To further enhance this room feature, take the time to plan the decor you hang on the wall over the piano. This space allows you to show off the styles of piano music you like and experiment with the visual elements using the features of the piano as your source of inspiration. As you select the decorative elements for your over-the-piano display, keep certain elements in mind.

Instructions

    • 1

Paint the wall or walls behind the piano. If it's an upright piano, paint the wall that you'll lean the piano against a different color than the walls next to it. If it's a baby grand or a grand that you've positioned in a corner of the room, paint the two adjoining walls a different color than the other walls. Choose a color that you find visually dramatic, such as black, to represent the ebony keys on the keyboard.

    • 2

Stencil music notes on the accent wall. Create random notes or recreate a musical passage from your favorite piece of piano music.

    • 3

Choose artwork or photos that have a piano music theme. If you love jazz, hang pictures of Gene Harris or posters advertising a piano jazz festival. For the lover of classical music, put up paintings of great keyboard composers, such as Mozart. Frame sheet music for your favorite piano sonata or old records of famous piano recordings.

    • 4

Personalize the space by hanging photos of recitals or piano practices. Include photos of your child's first recital or pictures of you and family gathering around the piano to sing Christmas songs. Include candid shots as well as pictures of people posing in front of the piano. Hang up pictures of family outings that you've taken to piano concerts together.

    • 5

Put up floating shelves and display sculptures with a music or piano theme. Look for items such as miniature pianos, sculptures of people dancing or busts of famous composers.

    • 6

Create shadowboxes with a piano music theme. Save old tickets from piano concerts you've attended, cut out articles about piano-related themes or collect piano bracelet charms.

    • 7

Hang up music note wall sconces. These can include sconces with or without candles. If you find some with candle holders, look for candles in black and white to represent the piano's keys.

    • 8

Put up mirrors to reflect the piano. Hang up one large mirror or series of small mirrors that you place together. Paint black music notes on white frames or look for mirrors with frames that have carved music notes in them.
