The Decorating Ideas for a Credenza Top

Credenza is an Italian word meaning truth. Historically, kings and noblemen had a large buffet table in their dining areas upon which prepared food was placed. A servant would taste the food for poison before the king dined, with the credenza serving as a place for the moment of truth. Today, credenzas often refer to dining room sideboards and office storage cabinets. Personal decorating preferences and the designated use of a credenza determine its tabletop decor.
  1. Walls

    • Before decorating the top of a credenza, dress up the wall behind it. Create an attractive focal point by centering a large mirror directly behind the credenza for a simplistic look that will lighten up the space. Hang a picture grouping on either side of the mirror, visually anchoring the credenza with the decorative wall. Accent the wall behind an office credenza with a large painting, framed art print or useful shelves.

    Office

    • Avoid clutter on the tabletop of an office credenza that is functioning as an additional work area. A piece of large pottery or a decorative statue placed atop an office credenza adds texture, color and visual interest without taking up necessary work space. Place books between ornamental bookends, decorative file trays and your computer monitor or laptop atop the credenza, creating a streamlined, primary desk area. Place a three-way lamp on the credenza to provide adjustable task lighting for reading, computer use and detailed work.

    Dining Room

    • Using a dining room credenza as a buffet serving area for dinner guests provides a convenient, attractive space for serving dinner, desserts or beverages. Keeping credenza decor limited to a few items allows for easy setup of a dining buffet. Place a large, potted plant or vase of fresh-cut flowers in the center of the credenza flanked by a buffet lamp on each end to provide decorative color, vibrancy and brightening light.

    Holiday Decor

    • Changing the holiday decor on a dining room credenza provides a way to enjoy the Christmas holidays with little effort. Position a tabletop Christmas tree with twinkling white lights in the middle of the credenza. Place assorted candlesticks topped with holiday red, green or white candles at one end of the credenza balanced by a large, glass hurricane filled with decorative Christmas ornaments at the opposite end. Intertwine the holiday decor with tiered plates of cookies, candies and small cakes for holiday guests.
