Turn off the lava lamp and unplug it. Leave it to cool overnight. All the wax should be hard at the bottom of the lamp.
Remove the lid gently from the lava lamp with an adjustable wrench and set it aside. Slowly dump out the old liquid.
Fill the lava lamp 3/4 full with clean water from the tap, slowly, while holding the lamp at an angle so the water stream does not hit the wax directly. Swirl the water around and dump it out. Repeat this until the water runs clear.
Fill the lava lamp to the top of the neck, just to where it tapers off. Replace the lamp, plug it in, and turn it on so the wax can melt.
Add three drops of liquid dishwashing soap to your lava lamp bottle. To 1 cup of water add 1/4 cup of epsom salts. Stir until the salt dissolves.
Wait for the wax in the lamp to become melted. Insert the straw into the salt water 1 inch. Place your finger over the open end of the straw. Transfer the salt water in the straw to the lava lamp and drop it in slowly.
Wait five minutes. Continue adding salt water at the same rate, and waiting five minutes between additions, until the wax bubbles as it normally does. Replace the lid on the lava lamp.
