How to Add a Button to a Bolster Pillow

A bolster pillow is a cylindrical pillow that can be both decorative and functional for lower back support. Bolsters are commonly used as accents on chaise lounges, beds and sofas. If your bolster pillow is too plain, you can add a decorative button. You could also add several buttons of any color pattern or print, arranging them in whatever way seems attractive to you.

Instructions

    • 1

Insert one end of the thread through the eye of the curved quilting needle. Tie the other end in a small knot.

    • 2

Insert the needle down into the fabric of the bolster in the spot where you want to attach the button. Push the needle back up through the fabric 1/8 inch from where you inserted it.

    • 3

Pull the thread tight. The knot will keep it from going through the bolster entirely. Push the needle up through a hole in the middle of the button.

    • 4

Hold the button in place so it covers the knotted end of the thread. Push the needle down through the hole in the middle of the button that is diagonal to the first hole and into the fabric.

    • 5

Push the needle back up through the fabric and through the hole next to the one you just went through. Pull the thread up, then insert the needle down into the hole diagonal to that one. If you only have two holes, push the needle down through one and up through the next three times.

    • 6

Continue pushing the needle through the holes and up through the hole diagonal to it, repeating the process three times to secure the button to the bolster.

    • 7

Wrap the thread under the button and around the threads three times, securing the button in place. Push the needle into the fabric under the button, and bring it up 1/8 inch to the side, but still under the button.

    • 8

Remove the needle. Tie the thread in a knot near the fabric. Snip off the extra thread.
