How to Sew Edging on a Scarf

When you have old used clothing or accessories, you may think of giving them away or throwing them into the garbage. However, by sewing accents and decorations onto the fabric, they articles may appear new again. Sew edging onto a scarf to embellish a simple-looking scarf using basic sewing materials. This also enables you to customize and personalize the scarf in order to suit your personal style.

Things You'll Need

  • Scissors
  • Measuring tape
  • Fringed fabric
  • Straight pins
  • Thread
  • Sewing needle

Instructions

      Measure the length of the scarf.

      Cut two strips of fringed fabric, each equaling the same length as the length of the scarf. The fabric strip may be as wide as you prefer.

      Fold down the cut edge of one of the strips by 1/4 inch, then fold the edge over another 1/4 inch. Pin the rolled edge of the fringed fabric strip along one of the edges of the scarf using straight pins. Repeat this process for the opposite side of the scarf.

      Sew along the pinned edges using thread and a sewing needle. Remove all of the straight pins.

      Trim off any excess thread before wearing the scarf.
