Hanging a Bed Quilt

Quilts make wonderful wall hangings in a country, shabby chic or Cape Cod-style decorating scheme. With their inherently warm, comfortable, welcoming feel, quilts draw attention and are large enough to be the focal point of a room. Hanging over a fireplace, a bed or behind the couch, the colors in your quilt can set the color scheme for the entire room. Don't ruin your quilt by nailing it to the wall, however. Hanging a quilt properly will prevent holes and keep the fabric from stretching out of shape. There are three methods you can use to hang a quilt on the wall.

  • Pencil

Instructions

  1. Velcro Tabs

    • 1

Determine where you will hang the quilt. Measure carefully to position it high enough to hang without touching furniture. You will need a ladder if hanging a large quilt. Make small marks very lightly with pencil to show the desired placement.

    • 2

Attach the hook side of self-adhesive Velcro tabs to the back of the quilt, reinforcing them with a straight pin through the center. Place a row of tabs across the top of the quilt, spacing every 6 inches.

    • 3

Press the corresponding fuzzy side Velcro tabs together with the quilt's tabs, and remove the paper covering the self-stick backing. Press the quilt against the wall, positioning it carefully to your pencil marks. Press firmly over each Velcro tab to hold the quilt safely in place.

    Hanging Rod

    • 4

Measure the width of your quilt, and purchase a 1-inch-thick wooden dowel or metal curtain rod wide enough to hold the quilt with 1 inch extra on each side.

    • 5

Slide the hanging rod through the fabric sleeve on the back of your quilt. If your quilt does not already have a hanging sleeve, make one by taking a 4-inch-tall piece of fabric that is as wide as your quilt, folding it in half to create a tube, and then hand-stitching it to the back of the quilt's top edge.

    • 6

Measure to determine the appropriate height on your wall, then screw hooks large enough to hold the hanging rod into place, spacing them to correspond with the width of the quilt.

    • 7

Place the quilt on its hanging rod onto the hooks.

    Wooden Quilt Clamp

    • 8

Purchase a wooden quilt clamp that is the same width as your quilt.

    • 9

Loosen the screws so the two halves of the clamp separate slightly. Slide the top edge of your quilt into the clamp, arranging it so it is wrinkle free and spaced evenly in the clamp.

    • 10

Tighten the screws to hold the quilt firmly in place.

    • 11

Attach the quilt clamp to the wall using screws to hold it in place.
