How to Decorate Above a Bed in a Tall Room

Modern homes can feature unusual architecture that is a challenge to decorate on a scale that meets the needs of the space. For a bedroom with high ceilings, a dramatic headboard or over-bed display adds grandeur and style to the room. When you use vintage doors from your local architectural salvage store, you introduce workmanship and style into an unadorned modern room. When applied in two or more rows vertically over the bed you create a focal point that is both simple and impressive. Use matching painted doors for a shabby-chic look or weathered, stained and shellacked doors for a more masculine, Old World look.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase vintage doors that measure about 30-by-77 inches.

    • 2

Measure the height of the wall from just below the mattress or above the headboard to a foot below the ceiling. Measure the width of the bed.

    • 3

Look at your measurements. If the wall height is 154 inches or greater, buy two doors to form a tall, vertical row. If your bed is 60 inches or smaller, purchase two doors to form a row horizontally. If the bed is larger than 60 inches, buy an additional door and then center the bed under the horizontal row of three.

    • 4

Sand lightly cracked, painted doors and spray with a clear sealant. If the doors are stained and shellacked, do not sand. Wipe with a damp cloth to remove dirt and debris.

    • 5

Move the bed and make a level mark on the wall at the height at which your door decoration should begin, either below the mattress mark or above the headboard.

    • 6

Place the first door on the wall vertically and attach to the wall stud with a heavyweight screw. Drill a hole in the upper center of the door for the screw and another toward the bottom of the door to attach the door to the wall securely.

    • 7

Place the next door up against the first to form the first row horizontally. Attach to the wall as described above. Place a third door if needed to reach your mattress width or larger.

    • 8

Place a ladder in front of the first door on the wall and get assistance to lift and hold the door up against the wall, above the first. The door should sit flush up against the lower door to create a cohesive look.

    • 9

Attach to the wall with heavy-duty screws as described above. Build the second level of doors across the space in a like manner.

    • 10

If the room is extremely tall, hang one more door horizontally over the second level of doors to form a “header.” The door might hang over the sides of the vertical doors, in which case you should center the door over the lower ones.
