How to Harden Polymer Clay Without an Oven

One of the perks of using polymer clay is the low heat requirement for baking the sculpted clay projects you create. While a conventional oven is the recommended way to finish the projects, you may not have a conventional oven available. You still can create your own sculptures with the versatile clay, as you can use other forms of heat to finish the projects.

Things You'll Need

  • Baking sheet or aluminum foil
  • Heat gun or hair dryer

Instructions

    • 1

Place the polymer clay projects onto a baking sheet or piece of aluminum foil.

    • 2

Set a heat gun or hair dryer to high heat.

    • 3

Blow hot air over the polymer clay pieces with the heat gun or hair dryer. Constantty move the heat source to provide even heat to the entire sculpture.

    • 4

Check the clay for hardness every five minutes and take a break if needed. Larger sculptures may take as long as an hour of total heating time, while thin ornaments and beads may be fully cured in 10 minutes. The clay is done when it feels solid, rather than putty-like.
