Hanging a Picture Behind a Couch

You're not done rearranging or designing a room until you hang the wall art. Recycling existing nails or previously installed wall mounts to hang a picture above your couch can leave the artwork off-center and awkward. Or worse, the picture may become a low-hanging hazard. Use your design savvy to position the picture at a pleasing viewing level that aligns with the flow of the room and other wall art.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the length of the picture and couch using a measuring tape.

    • 2

Divide the couch measurement in two. Re-measure this length and place a pencil mark 5 to 9 inches above the tallest part of the couch on the wall. This indicates the center of the couch.

    • 3

Make a second mark, directly above the first mark on the wall, at eye-level from a standing position.

    • 4

Divide the length of the picture measurement in two. Place that number on the measuring tape on the second mark. Draw a third pencil mark at the end of the measuring tape and again at the measurement that corresponds to the total length of the picture.

    • 5

Secure two wall-mount hooks to the wall using a hammer. Place the hooks to the inside of the third and fourth measurements so the hooks will be obscured by the hanging picture.

    • 6

Hang the lip of the picture frame or wall mounts attached to the back of the picture on the hooks.

    • 7

      Erase all visible pencil marks.
