How to Combine Photographs and Paintings on Your Walls

Artwork and personal photos are a way of both adding color to your walls and personalizing your home so it speaks more to your life and tastes. Combining photos with paintings creates a collage that may be more effective at creating an effect than either photos or paintings by themselves can produce. Pay attention to the sizes and colors of the pictures and paintings before hanging them on your wall to achieve the best results.

Instructions

    • 1

Gather your photo and painting options into one room so you have easy access to all of them for mixing and matching.

    • 2

Measure the size of the wall you're using with a tape measure. This lets you know how much space you have available for hanging.

    • 3

Mark off the same space dimensions of the wall on your floor using string. If the wall area is small enough, use your bed instead. The string sets the boundaries of the space so you can place various selections in that area to see how they look together.

    • 4

Choose a larger photo or painting that will be the centerpiece for that section of wall. Place it on the floor within the strings so you see how much space you have around it.

    • 5

Place smaller photos or paintings that either have a similar color scheme or a similar emotional content with each other around the centerpiece. Leave enough space between pieces so each one stands out as an individual selection and the collage doesn't look too busy.

    • 6

Mix and match photos and paintings until you find an overall combination that you like.

    • 7

Hang your selection of photos and paintings on the wall in the same arrangement as you had on the floor.
