How to Decorate the Top of a Hutch on a Bookcase

The top surface of tall furniture pieces is often neglected and left unadorned, lacking any visual interest. Placing an arrangement of similar decorative items with assorted heights atop a tall piece of furniture, such as a hutch on a bookcase, can add color, texture and aesthetic interest to a room. Displaying collections of pottery, baskets, vases, plants, artwork, photographs, pitchers, lanterns or figurines can make a room feel cozier and more inviting, as well as adding a design-savvy finished touch.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the woven, round plate on a plate stand on top of the hutch at its center point, pushing it to the back edge of the hutch's top.

    • 2

Position the tallest piece of pottery atop the hutch's midpoint in front of the large woven plate, which will provide an anchor for the rest of the pottery pieces.

    • 3

Stagger the remaining pottery pieces on either side of the tallest piece until they are visually pleasing. Place contrasting colors and varying heights beside each other, avoiding a straight line of pottery with similar colors and heights next to one another. Create balance for your grouping by placing an equal number of pottery pieces on each side of the tallest center piece.

    • 4

Position a potted plant or greenery on either side of the pottery arrangement, adding warmth, energy and balance to the space.
