How to Glue a Magnetic Board to a Door

Making holes in a wall for hanging pictures, hooks and shelving is often undesirable or even prohibited in some homes. And when it comes to needing a magnetic board for hanging important notes and writing quick messages, this restriction becomes a problem. Hanging a magnetic board on a door becomes a viable alternative to the wall. Instead of making those unsightly nail holes in the door, use an adhesive that is strong enough to bond wainscoting or beadboard to a wall. Even tile adhesive will work, and its cleanup may be easier to remove from the door than glue, when the board is no longer used.

Instructions

    • 1

Select the adhesive. Search for an adhesive with high bonding qualities but easy removal to save the integrity of the door even beyond the use of the magnetic board.

    • 2

Measure the width and length of the magnetic board with a tape measure, and subtract 2 inches from the width measurement and then the length measurement. This reduction in measurements leaves enough of a gap between the edge of the board and the glue so that it is not visible once the board is hung.

    • 3

Turn the magnetic board over, and apply a generous amount of adhesive to the back of the magnetic board. Avoid spreading the adhesive too close to the ledge, so leave at least one to two inches from the edges without the glue.

    • 4

Transfer the width and length measurements in Step 2 to the door to mark the area for the glue.

    • 5

Spread some adhesive on this small section of the door where the magnetic board will hang. Do not exceed the width and length of the measurement marks.

    • 6

Allow the glue to become tacky to the touch. Use a rag to make sure that the glue is starting to stick instead of just feeling wet.

    • 7

Align the back of the magnetic board with the glue on the wall. Push it against the door, and twist it left and right to make the glued surfaces stick together.

    • 8

Use a level to level the magnetic board while the glue is still moist and flexible.

    • 9

Wipe away excess glue with a dry rag. Moisten a rag to wash away any remaining glue residue on the door.

    • 10

Allow the glue to set and dry for 24 hours. Even if the adhesive product states a shorter drying time frame, the extra time only ensures a tough, strong bond. This is important because the board will be leaned on for writing and posting notes and also because it is on a door that may be moved several times in a day.
