How to Create Symmetry With Wall Hangings

Wall decor doesn't have to only add color or pattern to a room. Create a sense of balance in any room with symmetrical wall hangings. Use mathematic principles such as geometry to create similar angles within bedrooms, living spaces or even dining rooms. Instead of relying on furniture or the room's shape itself to add a sense of symmetry, patchwork quilts, tapestries, draping fabric or other similar wall hangings can transform a room visually from imbalanced to straight and serene.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose an even number of wall hangings such as two or four that have very similar styles, sizes, shapes and colors or patterns. While you don't necessarily have to choose completely matching wall hangings, they should be similar enough to create a continuous look and maintain an overall balance of symmetry once hung.

    • 2

Select two opposite walls. Look for walls that have more empty space and are free from multiple windows or oversized furniture.

    • 3

Measure the height for each wall hanging. To create a sense of symmetry, each wall hanging should be at the same exact height. Choose 58 inches for an eye-level display. Pull the tape measure from the floor directly up. Mark 58 inches with a light pencil line for your first wall hanging.

    • 4

Measure the exact distance from the edge of the nearest adjoining wall to the pencil mark. Jot down that number and move to the opposite wall to repeat the same process. For example, if your first pencil mark is 3 feet from the adjoining wall, the second mark should be 3 feet from the adjoining wall on the opposite space.

    • 5

Place one wall hanging in the midline or center of each wall or space two hangings on each wall equal distance apart, repeating the measuring process. Hammer a hook, nail or similar hanger into the wall on each pencil mark. Hang the decorative wall art on the hook. Create a straight line with the level. Adjust each hanging to make it even. Your wall hangings should look like mirror images of each other on opposite walls, but in the same exact space.
