Use the hose attachment on a vacuum to clean the kiln and the shelf. Run the nozzle along the shelf to remove dust and debris.
Run the vacuum nozzle along the bottom of the kiln, but be careful not to gouge the soft brick.
Flip the kiln shelf upside-down. Repeat this after each firing. It can help prevent the shelf from becoming warped.
Pour a powdered kiln wash into a glass jar. Add the amount of water that the manufacturer of the kiln wash recommends. Most manufacturers tend to recommend using four to six times the amount of water to kiln wash.
Screw on the lid of the jar and shake it to mix the kiln wash.
Dip a fine-bristled brush into the kiln wash until it is thoroughly wet. Brush the kiln shelf in one direction, applying a thin, even coat. Do not move the brush back and forth. Add more kiln wash as needed.
Add a second coat of kiln wash, moving the brush in the opposite direction. Repeat this twice more, applying kiln wash in the four cardinal directions. As you work, periodically shake the jar of kiln wash, because it will naturally settle.
Allow the kiln wash to dry completely, which usually takes about a day. Accelerate the drying process, if desired, by heating the kiln to 500 degrees Fahrenheit for about 30 minutes. Leave the kiln door open slightly. Allow the kiln to completely cool.
