How to Divide a Room With Style

Many living spaces such as lofts or modern homes feature big rooms that serve more than one function such as a dining room/living room set-up. Dividing this type of room so that it's both stylish and functional is one of the challenges of effective room decorating. There are several ways that you can divide a room. Each is simple to employ. However, each can be modified and decorated to fit your personal decorating preferences.

Instructions

  1. Screens

    • 1

Place decorative screens between the two sides of the room you'd like to divide. Choose screens that fit your room's decorating style. For example, if you've opted for a sleek, Japanese-style decor, find a large shoji screen and place it between the areas you want to divide. Select a screen that's large enough to create a visual barrier between the two sides, but that still allows you to walk around it.

    • 2

Use stencils to decorate a wooden screen. Choose a pattern that fits with the room's decor. For example, if this room features a high-style color scheme such as black and hot pink together, paint the screen black and stripe it with hot pink.

    • 3

Create a smaller set of matching screens by painting photo frame screens the same color and place them in the corners opposite the screens to give the room a balanced effect.

    • 4

Decorate the areas in front of both sides of the screen. Place floor lamps, dried flower arrangements or decorative tables in front of each side of the screen. Choose these items not only according to the decorative style of the room, but also in terms of how they fit the function of the side of the room they're on.

    Bookcase

    • 5

Get a large, free-standing bookcase and place it between two areas of a room such as the living and dining areas. A bookcase with an open back allows you to look from one side of the divided room to the other, but still creates a decorative barrier.

    • 6

Paint the inside of the shelves a color that contrasts with the outer areas of the bookcase. For example, if you've chosen a white wooden bookcase, paint the insides of the shelves black. This will make the piece look striking without going overboard.

    • 7

Add a decorative and functional material to the back of your bookcase such as cork. This provides your bookcase with an interesting visual elements and allows you to use it to hang up items such as calendars or lightweight photographs, turning the back of the piece into another wall in the room you're dividing.

    • 8

Decorate the shelves with items such as candle displays, collections of pottery of different sizes or with framed family photos. Choose items that look good from every angle if you've chosen a bookcase with an open back.
