How to Frame a Hanging Mask

Carved wooden masks, Venetian masks, hand painted masks and papier mache masks can be hung up as wall decor. Although masks can be hung without frames, this does leave them open to damage from people knocking them off the wall or from dust collecting on them for extended periods of time. Framing them in a shadowbox frame protects them from dust and accidents, while still allowing you to display and enjoy them.

Things You'll Need

  • Tape measure
  • Shadowbox (size determined by size of mask)
  • Hanging tack

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the height, width and depth of the mask you are framing. Add 2 inches to the height and width and 1 inch to the depth. This is the size shadowbox frame you will need for that mask. You can find them at your local craft store or framing specialty store.

Remove the back of the shadowbox frame and position the mask on it where you want it to hang.

    • 3

Stick a hanging tack in the backing of the shadowbox for the mask to hang on. Press the sharp end of the hanging tack into the backing so that it is firmly attached. Then place the mask on the tack and make sure it is hanging where you want it.

Reattach the backing to the shadowbox frame with the mask now hanging from the hanging tack. This works similarly to putting the backing on a picture frame after placing a picture in the frame. Place the backing against the back of the shadowbox so that the frame is hanging inside the frame. Then swivel the clamps on the back to lock the backing in place and keep the mask from falling out.
