Painting Ideas for Wooden Knobs

Brightly painted wooden knobs on a piece of furniture can make all the difference in its appearance, changing a boring, drab piece into a personalized and functional work of art. Many stores sell ready-made knobs adorned with brightly colored patterns and pictures, however, these can be costly, especially when many knobs are needed for a project. You can create the same look on wooden knobs with a little bit of paint and some artistic inspiration.
  1. Solid Colors

    • The most basic way to transform a wooden knob is to paint it a solid bold color. This is a great method if you are not artistically inclined. A smooth paint job is key, as any bumps or lumps will be more visible without any design to hide mistakes. Use a flat paintbrush and apply acrylic paint in thin coats, sanding between coats when needed. Finish each knob with one coat of high gloss varnish for knobs that shine and catch the eye.

    Animal Print

    • Animal prints add an exotic look to any piece and transform a boring bureau or cabinet into a wild-looking conversation piece. Base-coat the knobs in the lighter color found in the print. For example, tiger stripes would require an orange base-coat and zebra print would require a white base-coat. Use a liner brush and black acrylic paint to apply the intricate stripes or spots onto the knobs.

    Stenciled Designs

    • For more elaborate patterns, small stencils can be purchased at hobby shops and craft stores. Paint the knobs in the base color of your choice. Use a stencil spray adhesive to stick the stencils exactly where you want them on the knobs. This ensures clean lines and allows your hands to be free to paint instead of holding the stencil in place. Use a stencil brush and a secondary paint color to carefully stamp the paint onto the stencil. Allow the paint to dry and gently remove the stencil from the knob. Stencil adhesive is made to create a temporary bond, making removal quick and easy.

    Children's Prints

    • Paint your child's favourite characters or items onto the knobs. Ballerinas, baseball players, princesses and cars are all suitable design ideas for childrens furniture. Use acrylic paint and a liner brush to carefully paint the designs onto the knobs. You may need to reference a picture while painting to get an acurate depiction. Take your time and ensure each detail is correct. Use a hairdryer to speed the drying process when a more intricate, layered design is painted.
