How to Hang a Large Painting Adjacent to a Bed

A large painting often becomes the focal point in a room, pulling eyes to it with its size and colors. When you hang artwork in a bedroom, take care to arrange the pieces properly on the walls. You might hang a large painting adjacent to a bed to display your beautiful artwork in a spot where you will be able to enjoy it from your bed.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the length of the adjacent wall space to determine the center point. If a window, door or large piece of furniture interrupts the wall space, measure the open space where you will hang the painting. Make a small mark at the center point of the wall between the left and right edges.

    • 2

Measure 57 inches up from the floor with the tape measure at the center point you marked on the wall and make a mark with the pencil. The center of the painting should go at this point. The 57-inch mark represents average eye height and is a measurement common to art museums.

    • 3

Measure the height of the painting and divide this measurement by two to determine the center point of the painting. Measure the distance between the center point of the painting to the point on the back of the painting where the hanging hardware sits, or the point where the tightened wire on the back of the painting reaches.

    • 4

Place the tape measure at the center mark on the wall and measure straight up the distance between the center of the painting and the hanging hardware. Make a small “X” at this point with the pencil -- this is where you must install the hanging hook for the painting.

    • 5

Drill a small pilot hole at the “X” and then screw the toggle bolt into the wall. When the toggle passes through the drywall, it will expand its "wings" and anchor securely in the wall to support the weight of the painting.

    • 6

Hang the painting on the wall. Add additional smaller artwork on either side of the large painting if you desire, hanging each picture with center points at 57 inches from the floor.
