How to Mount a Mirror on a Tile Wall

At first glance, a tile wall might not seem like the ideal place to hang a mirror. Unlike the standard walls in the rest of your home, tile is not only difficult to drill through, but is also more prone to damage. Despite this, a few extra steps in the standard mirror mounting process will help you to install a mirror on a tile wall safely and securely.

Things You'll Need

  • Measuring tape
  • Washable marker
  • Level
  • Duct tape
  • Drill
  • Masonry bit
  • Plastic wall anchors
  • Mounting hardware

Instructions

    • 1

Wipe down the wall with a bathroom or all-purpose cleaner.

    • 2

Measure the distance between the mounting bracket on the back of the mirror and the top of the mirror. If there is more than one mounting bracket, measure the distance between the two brackets on the back of the mirror as well.

    • 3

Determine where you want to mount the mirror on the tile wall and mark this spot with a washable marker. Measure down from this point the distance between the mounting brackets on the back of the mirror and the top of the mirror and mark it. This is the point in which the mounting hardware needs to be installed; if you need more than one, use the measurements between the two mounting brackets on the back of the mirror to mark it on the wall, and use a level to make sure the line between the two points is straight.

    • 4

Cut small pieces of duct tape and place two to three layers over each mounting point. This will make it easier for you to control your drill bit when making the holes in the tile for the mounting hardware. Measure the exact points where you need to drill the holes for the hardware again and mark these off with a marker on top of the tape; use a level to make sure the marks are straight.

    • 5

Place a masonry drill bit in a power drill and carefully drill into the marks you made over the tape. Hold the drill steady and apply even pressure. Trying to drill the hole too quickly will increase the risk of cracking the tile into which you’re drilling.

    • 6

Place a plastic wall anchor that fits the screws used for the mirror mounting hardware in each hole you made in the tile. Gently tap the anchors into place with a hammer, making sure not to hit it too hard. Plastic anchors are notorious for bending, rendering them useless.

Install the mounting hardware that came with your mirror into the plastic wall anchor and hang the mirror on the tile wall. If the mirror is especially heavy, have a friend or family member help with this step.
