How to Stencil a Silhouette on a Pillow

When you're planning to redecorate your home, you can end up spending a lot of money on new home accessories, such as throw pillows. One solution is to change the pillows you already own to make them appear fresh and new again. Instructions

    • 1

Tape a 12-inch square sheet of heavyweight vellum onto a wall using art tape, which can be applied and removed without leaving behind any residue. Position the vellum approximately 40 inches off of the ground.

    • 2

Place a chair in front of the vellum and ask a friend or family member to sit on the chair and turn sideways.

    • 3

Place a lamp in front of the chair, which will cast a silhouette shadow of your friend or family member's face onto the vellum.

    • 4

Trace the outline of the silhouette onto the vellum using a wax pencil.

    • 5

Remove the vellum and tape from the wall, then place the vellum sheet onto a matte cutting board.

    • 6

Cut around the drawn lines using a pen knife, then remove the whole interior to create a silhouette stencil.

    • 7

Tape the vellum stencil onto a throw pillow using art tape.

    • 8

Coat the tip of a sponge brush with fabric paint, then tap the sponge brush over the vellum stencil. Fill in the stencil evenly with a light coating of fabric paint.

    • 9

Remove the stencil and art tape, then allow the stenciled silhouette to air dry for 1 hour.
