How to Decoupage Napkins Onto Tiles

In the early 1800s, the French used decoupage to decorate the interiors of their homes by covering everything from bookcases to cabinets. Decoupage is an art technique that involves pasting paper and napkins over different materials. Add some artistic touches to your home by covering plain tiles with decorative napkins. Once the tiles are covered, use them as coasters, hang them like pictures or give them as gifts.

Napkins
Tiles
Decoupage glue
Small sponge brush
Polyurethane
Self-stick felt bumpers

Instructions

  Cut or tear the napkin 1/2 inch larger than the tile. Cut or tear small pieces of napkin for a mosaic look.

  Coat the top and sides of the tile with a layer of decoupage glue and a sponge brush.

  Center the napkin over the tile. Allow the napkin to drape over the edges. Gently smooth out the wrinkles with your fingers or the sponge brush.

  Coat the top and sides of the tile with a layer of glue. Follow the manufacturer’s directions and allow the glue to dry. Apply a second coat when the first one is dry.

  Coat the top and sides of the tile with a layer of polyurethane. Follow the manufacturer’s directions and allow the tile to dry. Apply a second coat when the first one is dry.

  Adhere felt bumpers to the bottom of the tile.
