Cut monofilament or fishing line into pieces the desired length for hanging the butterflies from the ceiling. Cut one length for each butterfly. For example, if you want to hang the butterflies overhead allowing at least 6 feet of clearance, and the ceiling is 8 feet from the floor cut the pieces of monofilament 2 feet long. The butterflies will hang down a little less than 2 feet once you tie the clear line to the butterflies and attach it to the ceiling. Alternatively, cut the lines different lengths to make it look like the butterflies are flying at different levels.
Tie one end of a line to a butterfly. Tie each butterfly, so you can hang all of them at the same time. Put the butterflies and the tape or pushpins in a box.
Position the ladder below where you want to hang the butterflies. Put the box of butterflies near the top of the ladder. Mount the ladder. Use tape or clear pushpins to attach the butterflies to the ceiling, such as along a beam, seam or near a light fixture where the attachment won't show. Alternatively, tie the loose ends of the lines to chandeliers or other ceiling fixtures. Adjust the line to hang the butterfly how you want it and tie the end of the line in any kind of knot. Cut off any excess line.
