Interior Decorating With Full-Length Mirrors

Full-length mirrors can enhance the decor in essentially every room in your home. Mirrors are often overlooked in home decorating, even though their reflective surfaces can take the place of artwork or fill up blank space in your home for a fraction of the cost of other decor. Plus, they make a dark room less so. The best way to decorate with full-length mirrors depends on your decorating style, the style of the mirrors and how you plan to use them.
  1. Accessories

    • Strategically hang or place your full-length mirrors the way you would any other accessory in your home. A series of full-length mirrors can decorate a hallway in lieu of artwork. Mix it up by creating a gallery of sorts, using mirrors with different frames, or decorate frameless mirrors with window stickers. Hang a full-length mirror horizontally above a fireplace, buffet or sofa table, and place small decorative objects, such as votive candles or small crystal figurines, in front of it. Alternatively, use a frameless, beveled-edge mirror in an unexpected way, such as placing it on a long table like a runner. Add candles, flower petals or decorative dishes for a reflective table display.

    Practical Purposes

    • Full-length mirrors are practical as well as decorative. Hang a mirror on a closet door, the back of a door or anywhere people tend to get dressed or get set to go out, such as in a bedroom or near an exterior door. Floor mirrors on stands can be placed in empty corners or spaces in your home. The mirrors will reflect light, which typically makes a room feel larger. Set up the mirrors to reflect a window that overlooks a decorative garden or an attractive painting in your home. Placing a mirror near the door can decorate an empty corner while providing a spot to take a final glance at yourself before heading out.

    Themed Details

    • Tie the full-length mirrors in with a decorating theme if possible. For example, a Hollywood glam, fashionista or modeling theme room can make use of the mirror as a theme accessory. Position three stand-alone mirrors in a semi-circular shape, like those in a dressing room, and place pegs or hooks nearby for hanging clothes. The position of the mirrors will allow you to see your front, side and back all at the same time. Line an entire wall with full-length mirrors for a spa or home-gym feel.

    Feng Shui

    • Mirrors represent the water element in feng shui practices. They are best placed in the southeast, north or east corners of your home. The mirrors are thought to reflect energy into the space, which can work with or against you. If the mirror reflects images of things you enjoy or objects thought to increase positive energy, it is believed you're on good footing. If the mirror reflects the entrance to your home, a toilet or other negative things, it's considered bad because you will be reflecting the same thing back into your home and life. According to feng shui, mirrors should not be placed in your bedroom and should be minimized in bathrooms, where there are already a lot of water elements.
