Decorations for a Girl's Room Made with Lights

When decorating a girl's bedroom, finding ways to make the space feel special can be a challenge. However, one of the easiest ways to create the right mood in a room is to play with the lighting. While ambient and task lighting are necessary so your daughter can read and do homework, lighted decorations can give her room a soft, magical feel.
  1. Custom Lamp Shades

    • While you can buy pre-made lampshades that add a decorative touch to your daughter’s room, making your own shade allows you to personalize its look so it fits the bedroom’s theme or your daughter’s personality. Purchase a plain white or colored shade at a home-goods store, and gather a variety of trimmings to embellish it. Fringe, cording, ribbon, sequins, faux gemstones and beads are all available from the craft store, and can easily be affixed to a lampshade with a hot glue gun. For a more personalized look, decoupage photos of friends and family, ticket stubs, post cards or other paper mementos to the shade for a one-of-a-kind decoration.

    Paper Lanterns

    • Available in a variety of colors, patterns, shapes and sizes, paper lanterns can add a whimsical look to your daughter’s room. Some lanterns come strung together, and are ideal for hanging against a wall. Others are available individually, so you can hang them from the ceiling in various spots throughout the room. If you find plain lanterns whose shape and size you like, you can also embellish them with rhinestones or sequins for an eye-catching look. When hanging your lanterns, make sure that the bulbs inside do not come into contact with the actual lanterns, since the paper can ignite if it touches a hot bulb. Always use the exact type of bulb recommended by the manufacturer.

    Shimmering Vines

    • For a girl’s bedroom decorated with a garden theme, you can use mini-lights to turn the space into a shimmering secret garden. Purchase a few lengths of artificial vines and several strands of battery-operated, white mini-lights like those used to decorate at the holidays. You can opt for plain, leafy green vines or those that feature delicate, colored flowers. Carefully twine the lights and the vines together, using thin wire to secure them in place. You can place these shimmering vines in a variety of spots in the bedroom for a fun, glowing touch. They are ideal decorations for the top of a canopy bed or tall posters on a bed frame. You can also drape the lighted vines over the top of the windows or around doorways. Always select lights that are designated safe for indoor use, and to reduce your fire risk, turn mini-lights off when your daughter goes to bed or is not in her room. Check them regularly for signs of frayed wires and damaged sockets as well.

    Lighted Frames

    • Battery-operated mini-lights also provide an ideal way to dress up plain frames for a mirror, bulletin board or photographs. Mini-lights come in a wide range of colors, including blue, green, pink, purple, white and multicolored, so you can choose your daughter’s favorite colors for the project. Affix small metal hooks to the sides of the frame to hold the lights in place and carefully outline the entire item with the lights. If there are extra lights, you can double them up along the frame for an even brighter effect. Follow the same fire safety precautions with your lighted frames as you would with the lighted vines.
