How to Fill Up a Large & Tall Living Room Wall

Fill up a large and tall living room wall with a variety of decor items, such as art or photos, to create a focal design point instead of a blank and boring empty space. Position a large piece of living room furniture -- such as a couch, loveseat or cabinet -- at the base of the tall wall to create a starting point in decorating the area. Resist the urge to fill up every inch of the large wall to avoid a cluttered and distracting look.

Instructions

    • 1

Paint the large living room wall in a complementary color to the room's existing walls to create an accent wall. Hang a large art piece -- whether it's a single long piece, several canvas pieces hung in a vertical column or a large, ornate mirror -- to fill up the tall space. Attach recess lighting above the artwork and install metal candle scones on either side to complete the look.

    • 2

Create a photo collage to fill up the tall living room wall. Choose frames in the same size, such as 8 by 10, or select frames in different shapes and styles for an eye-catching look. Hang a large group of frames on the wall to create a big square filled with pictures. Choose black frames with black and white family photos, or frame pictures of landscapes or abstract designs, depending on the living room's theme and decor.

Paint a tall, vertical mural on the wall to fill the space and create a focal art piece. Hire a professional or do it yourself for a budget friendly option. Select a mural in a theme that matches the rest of the room's decor, whether a landscape scene, an abstract or a replica of a classic painting. Or consider random designs in an accent color, such as shapes, lines or silhouettes of nature items like trees or flowers.

Install shelving, attached directly to the wall, from near the floor all the way up to the ceiling. Match the color of the shelving to the existing furniture -- whether it's white, wood or another color -- and fill the shelves with a variety of decor items. Use the shelves to store books, DVDs, CDs, knickknacks, candles and framed photos. Place several small baskets or bins on the lower shelves for storage and organization of small items.

Install a long, ornate rod a couple of feet from the ceiling and hang a large, elegant rug or an heirloom quilt to fill the space. Alternatively, create your own custom wall hanging. Purchase fabric to match the living room colors and theme and cut it to the desired size to fit the wall space. Sew the edges to create a polished look and hang it from the installed rod.
