How to Make Crib Canopies

Make an elegant crib canopy to add a touch of romance to your baby's room. The crib canopy can be assembled in a couple of minutes and adorned with all manner of things to keep baby busy while in bed. Create the perfect curtained boudoir or fun camping crib for your baby. A few minor alterations will transform your crib canopy into a handy mosquito net that will keep bugs away when baby is resting.

Things You'll Need

  • 10-inch embroidery ring
  • Pot rack hook
  • For a curtain canopy:
  • 2 netting, tulle or chiffon curtains, 44 inches wide and 96 inches long
  • 2 lengths of ribbon, 24 inches long and 3 inches wide
  • Needle and thread
  • For a tent canopy:
  • 2 lengths of mosquito or camouflage netting, 44 inches wide and 96 inches long
  • Needle and matching thread or sewing machine
  • 2 carabiners

Instructions

  1. Baby Curtain Crib Canopy

    • 1

Unscrew the embroidery rings. There are two rings; remove and discard the smaller inside ring.

    • 2

Locate the top of the curtains. These will be hemmed over in a tube at the top for curtain rods. Thread the embroidery ring through the tubes and screw the embroidery ring shut.

    • 3

Tie each of the ribbons over opposite sides of the rings where there are gaps between the curtains. Tie bows in the ribbons, making sure that they are the same size. Thread the needle with thread that matches the curtains. Tie a knot in the bottom of the thread. Sew from the back of the bow knot to the front. Repeat until the bows are secure and can carry the weight of the canopy.

    • 4

Screw the pot rack hook into the ceiling. Ensure that it is securely attached to the ceiling. Leave the two hooks facing the head and foot of the crib respectively. Slip the hooks through the knots in the bows and drape the curtains over each side of the crib. Decorate the inside of the canopy with photos and pictures or pin up baby's favorite toys.

Unscrew the 10-inch embroidery ring and discard the small inner circle.

    • 6

Find the narrow, width side of the fabric. Turn over a strip of fabric at the top (about 3 inches) and sew a hem along the width, leaving the sides open to create a tube. Repeat for the other piece of fabric.

    • 7

Thread the tube over the embroidery ring. Screw the embroidery ring closed. Attach the carabiners in the gaps between the two pieces of fabric.

    • 8

Screw the pot rack holder into the ceiling at the head of the crib. Ensure that it is securely affixed to the roof. Leave the hooks facing the head and foot of the crib. Hook the carabiners onto the pot rack holder and drape the fabric over the sides of the crib. Add toys, photos or other objects of interest to the inside of the canopy for baby to watch when in bed.
